Smoker negative
Smoker is practically free points once you understand cigarette spawns. The stress-management bonus is more useful than most beginners realise.
Why Players Take It
It hands you 4 points for a downside that barely exists in practice. Cigarettes are extremely common loot — gas stations, bedside tables, corpses, shops — so the "need" the trait creates is one the world keeps satisfying for free.
Early Game Impact
Negligible. You will trip over cigarettes before stress from nicotine withdrawal ever becomes a problem. Pick up every pack you see and the trait is invisible.
Mid Game Impact
Slightly positive, oddly enough. Smoking a cigarette actively reduces stress and unhappiness, so a Smoker has an on-demand mood tool that a non-smoker does not.
Late Game Impact
Stays neutral-to-positive as long as you keep a carton in reserve. The only real failure case is a long isolated run where you never restock — and even then, withdrawal stress is survivable.
Hidden Mechanics
The trait is less "a smoking addiction" and more "access to a consumable stress reducer." Veterans treat the 4 points as the real product and the cigarettes as a minor logistics line.
